What is a Discovery Flight?
Find out more about introductory flights at Eastrise Aviation
A discovery flight is a short flight. A prospective student pilot flies with an instructor to help the student understand the dynamics of flight. This introductory flight enables the student to make an informed choice whether they could pursue flying training. At a safe altitude and away from congested airspace, the flying instructor allows the student to manipulate the controls and have a feel of the aeroplane. This is often a life-changing experience that one never forgets. Here is what is included in the Silver package:
-
- A 20-minute briefing on aircraft components, airport operations etc.
- A 40-minute flight to the general flying area
- An opportunity to handle the aircraft controls in flight
- Free 7-day access to our online ground school
The Silver package costs MWK150,000 only. Our Gold package includes all of the above as well as a logbook which you will record the flight time. This will be credit toward your flight training when you enroll. The Gold package costs MWK200,000 only. Insurance is not included in discovery flights.
After your discovery flight
After the discovery flight and you want to pursue flying training, you will be required to get a medical certificate. We can make arrangements with designated aviation medical examiners within Malawi to schedule the test for you. After the medical certificate has been issued and you are deemed fit to fly, we will help you apply for a Student Pilot License (SPL) with the Malawi Department of Civil Aviation. You can only commence your flight training after the SPL has been issued. Issuance of an SPL is contingent on the student having a valid medical certificate. You will also need to purchase excess insurance to fulfill our training requirements. Please contact us for detailed information.
Have some questions?
A discovery flight is a great opportunity for the aspiring pilot to ask questions and to have an overview of the flying environment – right from the cockpit. We therefore encourage the aspiring pilot to ask as many questions as possible and to feel free and relaxed. Of course, our pilot will brief you so that you understand the critical phases of flight (such as takeoff and landing) where the legal obligation is to only discuss issues related to the flight to ensure there is utmost safety.
